Day 1
Stromness.
The town was an important trading port for Hudson's Bay company and North Sea whalers for a while. It is still full of Inuit artifacts brought from the north of Canada and Greenland.
The Kirkwall airport, is 30 minutes away from the port, which makes it a perfect point for some one to jump on board before we leave the port towards Faroe islands!
Day 3
Samburg Head.
14 hours after we left Orkney islands, the first cape of Shetland archipelago will show up on the horizon.
Bressay Lighthouse.
Lerwick is very close, we are almost there, when Bressay Lighthouse will get colors from the setting sun..
Lerwick.
After 20 hours of sailing in the North Sea, the farthest northern town of Great Britain will welcome us before we leave to Faroe.
The town is known for its Fort Charlotte, located right next to the harbor, and herring that might be found at any local restaurant.
Eshaness Lighthouse.
Using the regular land roads we will get ourselves to the place where lonely lighthouse looks to the Atlantic ocean from a 50 meters high rock..
Jarlshof.
After a powerful storm in 19th century some of the land was washed to the sea, and ancient settlement showed up to the sights of Shetland citizens. Archeologists found out that people started building houses here more than five thousand years ago.
Day 4–5
Waters of Atlantic ocean.
Like Vikings in the middle ages, and Dutch and English fleet at the age of sails, we will cross the waters of the Atlantic ocean.
220 nautical miles, or about 44 hours of a real sailing on the 50 meters barquentine.
During 2 days of the passage we will have enough time to practice classic sailing and navigation, watch sea life, play games and even party.
This is the most valuable time of any sea journey, as there is no internet connection or any other distraction of a modern world. You are surrounded with a beautiful scenery, and freshest air one can get on our planet. You can talk to your friend, or dive deep into your own thoughts for a days. Some would write a novel, some listen to favorite playlist. What would you do?
«Hey, there is something over the horizon! I see the land!» — Thats how it usually sounds after 40+ hours in the sea;)
Day 6–8
Torshavn.
After more than 40 hours of the North Sea passage under the sails, the gateway to Faroe islands will welcome us at its harbor. Custom clearance, and we can start exploring the archipelago.
Toshavn was a capital and trade center of Faroe islands ever since 9th century when vikings settled here the main ting, parliament, for archipelago. Now its infrastructure will let us to get around the islands on rented cars.
Saksun.
While our mighty ship is resting in Torshavn harbor we take cars from rental, and drive to the first point of interest: scandinavian farm houses of 17th century, located in the natural harbor between two mountains.
Gjogv.
Next stop will be in the harbor, formed by nature in unbelievable manner.
Fossá Waterfall.
And of course we cannot explore Faroe islands without driving to the waterfall which is falling 140 meters down to the sea.
Tjørnuvík.
Our road trip will end at the small village with a gigantic view.
Day 9
Around the Faroe archipelago.
Once we done with the road trip around Faroe islands it is time to see it all from the ocean side. We will spend one day sailing from Torshavn to Sørvágur through the northern part of archipelago, through its mighty fjords and next to skyscraper tall rocks.
Day 10
Sørvágur.
We will stop at Faroe islands for one more day next to one of its first Viking settlements dated of 9th century. Now this is a successful fishermen village with own fishing factory. From Sørvágur we will access unbelievable scenery of Vagar island.
Múlafossur.
Another waterfall that flows right into the sea.
Sørvágsvatn.
The lake on top of the rocky edge above the ocean.
Day 12
Eggjarnar.
It is time to leave Faroe islands. On our way back to Scotland we will sail by one more epic scenery place of the archipelago.
Stornoway.
After two days in the North Sea famous Scottish island town will welcome us back in Scotland. As the most of the towns and villages we have visited on our way so far, this one also was found by Vikings in the ninth century.
Now it is the capital of the biggest island in Scotland, Lewis and Harris.
Another chapter of our sailing saga is over, and the next one is about to begin. The airport is very close to Stornoway, so it is a good chance for someone to jump onboard.
